The Narthex Windows

In Narthex between the staircases are 8 windows symbolizing Christ’s commandments.
These windows were given by Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Chastain in honor of the youth of Texas and were designed by Marguerite Gaudin.
Each window includes “helping hands.”

On the east side of the Narthex, two sets of windows interpret the life and ministry of Jesus
as seen by the writers of the four gospels and Apostle Paul.

These windows were given by the Christian Churches of District 12 (near Wichita Falls)
and designed by Marguerite Gaudin.

The upper panels quote 1 Corithinans 9:22 while the lower panels of the Gospel Windows
repeat symbolism of the Umlauf carvings on the exterior and refer to imagery from
Revelation 4:7 about creatures surrounding the throne of God:
The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle.

Matthew – human/angel – Christ’s humanity

Mark – lion – Christ’s strength

Luke – ox – Christ’s sacrifice

John – eagle – eternal life through Christ
